Valley go down to the Moles

Report By Mole Valley

Despite a battling second half performance, the firsts went down to a narrow 3-2 defeat against unbeaten Molesey on a soggy bank holiday Monday.

Darren Salmon made several changes to the side that lost against Spelthorne Sports on the Saturday. Reece Jackson returned to the starting line up after missing Saturday through injury, with Nathan Oliver, Richie Smith and Adam Fletcher both recalled. Missing out were Chris Hugill working, Jordan Knight injured and both Fabian O'Brien and Richard Monan who dropped to the bench.

As you would expect from a side unbeaten and full of confidence, Molesey started brightly, and after some neat interplay their number 10 fired an effort wide of Gavin Dilley's right hand post in only the second minute.

We responded fairly positively, and after a Reece Jackson free kick had been cleared out of the area, Nathan Oliver fired an effort back in that was comfortably saved by the Molesey keeper.

Dilley and the Molesey keeper both then saved comfortably from deflected strikes, as both sides looked to gain the upper hand. Molesey opened the scoring on 9 minutes, the initial strike was blocked but deflected out to James McShane who fired home from close range to give the hosts the lead.

The sturdy number 10 then headed over from a left wing cross, and on 12 minutes Molesey were given another free header inside our area, but were again unable to get it on target.

McShane saw a shot deflected wide on 13 minutes, and from the resultant corner, Ollie Robinson headed over.

Our attacks were fairly sporadic, but we almost levelled the scores just after the quarter hour. A neat ball round the corner by Jackson set Michael Campbell away, but he was denied by a last ditch tackle by Moses Spencer, with the ball deflecting goalwards and bringing a good save out of the keeper.

Molesey increased their lead on 21 minutes. Good play on the edge of our area, involving four players, eventually saw the ball reach Ashby Charles on the right and his low cross shot was forced home by Jamie Linegar from close range.

At this stage, it was looking possible that we could have gone the same way as Chertsey Town and Haywards Heath Town before us. Spencer headed a corner over the bar, before at the other end neat play inside the Molesey area between Campbell and McCarry ended with a great tackle by Craig Lewington just as McCarry was about to shoot.

We somehow managed to see out the rest of the half without Molesey adding to the score, and words of wisdom were required as we looked to regroup for the second half.

Darren made two changes at the break, with Todd Sullivan, and the injured Harry Smart departing, to be replaced by Richard Monan and debutant Andrew White.

The changes paid dividends almost immediately. In the opening minute a great low cross by McCarry was met by White, with his first touch in a Valley shirt, and he fired beyond Molesey's keeper to bring us back into the game.

Molesey responded immediately and on 49 minutes a drive from about 25 yards by the number 11 flew into the bottom right hand corner for 3-1, and a minute later McCarry headed an effort from a corner off the line. This seemed to spark us into life, and we gradually started to come back into the game.

Campbell created a chance for himself, only to be denied by a good tackle by Robinson, and a dangerous Richie Smith free kick was cleared by Robinson as we put Molesey under some pressure.

Campbell almost found himself with a shooting chance on 62 minutes, but was just unable to get a foot on Monan's through ball and the ball skidded off for a goal kick, and at the other end the 10 fired an effort wide for Molesey.

Valley made their final change with the experienced Jay Holden replacing Nathan Davey, as the side went to three up top.

It was a change that again almost paid dividends immediately, having survived a scare when Dilley had been forced into a low save following a rare mistake by Liam Holden, Valley then reduced the arrears on 69 minutes. Jackson, Campbell and Jay Holden were all involved, and eventually the ball found White on the right, his cross to Jackson was inch perfect, and the finish true, to bring the scores back to 3-2.

Jackson almost bought the scores level two minutes later, when he connected with a Nathan Oliver free kick, only to see his loopy header cleared off the line by the left back, and on 73 minutes McCarry set up Campbell but he dragged his effort just off target.

Molesey almost increased their lead with just under 15 minutes remaining, when McCarry and Holden were caught over-playing at the back, but the Molesey number 11 couldn't find him strike partner with the low cross.

Molesey's Charles found his way into the book following a poor challenge on Smith, who was also carded for his reaction, and a couple of minutes later the same player hauled down Jay Holden, but this time no card was forthcoming (begs the question, if the first challenge hadn't received a yellow, would the second?).

Molesey had a couple of chances to increase their lead as time run out, with a free header going wide, and a long range shot also failing to trouble Dilley, before in the dying moments, Jackson came within an inch of giving Valley a point, when his well struck free kick bought a tremendous save out of the Molesey keeper.
