After last years successful season ending up as CCL Premier Champions....

Saturday's trip to the title favourites Folkestone Invicta marked The Moles return to the Ryman Div.1 South after a 7 year absence.

This was a game which would earmark a stern test for the young Molesey team, and would give some indication of where they stand playing against one of the strongest teams in the division, so the Moles travelled to Folkestone Invicta with excitement at the new challenge that lay ahead and with total intrepidation.

On a hot sunny day by the coast, in front of a decent crowd of nearly 250, they witnessed a typical first game of the season where it started off as a cautious affair by both teams however, as the half grew so did Folkestone, who were that little bit quicker with Molesey being the better footballing team creating the odd and half chance nevertheless, with strikers Rook and Draycott they were a handful and started to cause the Moles a few problems, where a deflected shot hit the Molesey post and Draycott should have done better by hitting the side netting from close range. Then on in the 35 minute, a cross into the Molesey box led to a melee of players scrambling for the ball where it was adjudged to have been handled by a Molesey player, up stepped Elliott to smash the ball home giving Molesey keeper Allen no chance.

HT: 1-0

The second half was a completely different affair as Molesey came out of the blocks appearing to be more confident outfit and back to their usual passing game, but a quick break down the right and a pin point cross made it easy for Rook to head home from close range, coming in on the blindeside of the defender to make it 2-0 on the 50th minute mark.

From hereon on a lovely pitch, Molesey took control of the game and dominated proceedings with the their slick pass and move style which supporters have become accustomed to forcing Folkestone back into their own half whilst creating chance after chance but to no avail. It was a fair comment made by the editor of the Folkestone Herald who reported ''Thankfully, Molesey couldn't hit a barn door'' which quite frankly had some truth about it, and at 2-0 had one of those easy chances gone in who knows what the outcome would be ? .. but the young Moles learnt that taking chances is what it's about as last season proved, so whilst pushing forward for their elusive goal, with 3 minutes to go, a breakaway on the left saw the Folkestone winger get to the byline where is cross was poked home by Vincent via a deflection, a bit harsh on Molesey as the game did not reflect a 3-0 scoreline, but the reality is that taking chances was the only difference where Folkestone took theirs and Molesey didn't.

But this was not the end of the scoring, as the game come to a close, the ball was picked up from a clearance by Molesey substitute Sam Robinson and from 25 yards hit a pearler into the top corner leaving the Folkestone keeper stranded, a consolation goal maybe, but on the second half display, one could say deserved for all the Moles endeavour....

FT: 3-1

An enjoyable day and game, which The Moles can come away with lots of positives and be encouraged especially from their second half performance, which even led to Folkestone supporters applauding them on their style of play which was nice to see.

Next up we have a local derby against Walton Casuals on Tuesday 11 August at Walton Road - Kick off 7.45pm

Please come along to cheer and support the lads....
