Despite the season being cut short, we still managed to play 24 games - not bad when you think hardly any matches were played in January and February due to the stormy weather.
Of those 24 contests, we won 13, drew 3 and lost the other 8.
Topping the performances chart was Goalkeeper Dave Woolley, yours truly, and striker Ricky Martin - all of us playing 22 games each. Ricky was also top scorer, amassing 40 goals, that's almost an average of 2 goals per game, while midfielder Ben Gribbin found the back of the net 21 times. Paul Deacon also scored 19 times. The rest of us got a goal here and there too!
The goal of the season was in fact an own goal from Ed Wilman, who for reasons still not known hit an absolute pearler from the edge of our own box which found top bins much to the delight of the opposition and to the dismay of Dave in goal and the back four. We still saw the funny side of it. Perhaps a close second was Gerry's Murphy's thunderstrike from 30 yards out against Cheam - that went in the right goal...
There were plenty of games to rejoice and a few to forget. Doing the double over Grafton was a particular highlight, as was the 9-1 trouncing of AFC Kingston at Imber Court early on in the season. We let ourselves down against ICC over at QPR's training ground - that's one game certainly to forget, while Epsom Athletic continue to be the best side on the circuit and will be very hard to beat over the coming years if they maintain their current squad.
As always the longstanding fixtures against proper Vets sides are the games we enjoyed the most. Our matches against Worcester Park, Southside, Brentham, Dinton and Burlington are always good clashes and we look forward to playing them all next season. We've also made some new friends in Whyteleafe and Old Wimbledonians - two really decent clubs both on and off the pitch and a new one for next season will be Raynes Park Vale who we are told are a decent side! Kevin Sweeney has already built next season's fixture list so we're in good shape. So when it is safe to resume we'll be ready! We've all become faux cyclists and runners since the lockdown and our strength and conditioning now comes in the form of lifting heavier recycling boxes out on binday....
On behalf of all the Vets I would like to thank our Chairlady Tracey Teague for her support and help on matchdays and to all the officials and volunteers at the club, as well as Kevin and Sue who do so much behind the scenes. Everything you do is greatly appreciated by us all.
Finally I'd like to pay tribute to Frank Boxall who has sadly passed away during the lockdown. Father to Andy and Brian, he was a stalwart supporter of the Vets over the years. No doubt he has taken his place next to Radar on the great substitute's bench in the sky, from where they can both have a good old moan about our performances!
Hopefully it won't be too long before we're all playing again. In the meantime please ensure everyone stays safe and well and we hope to see you all down at Walton Road soon.
