After the poor display we put together against Cove on Saturday a good display was called for, and the boys delivered in this Southern Combination Cup Quarter final tie.
As usual “The Dog” made a few changes but the lads settled quickly and looked to have a nice balance about them. We had the lions share of the ball but failed to create many chances in the opening 30 minutes. Things changed though in the final 15 of the half. Molesey had been content to give up possession and simply pull all their players back into their own half, relying on the odd break away to try and get a goal. In the 38th minute the Moles conceded a free kick out near the touch line. Levi swung a great ball in and Ricky Farnden put us in front with a very neat header from 8 yards out.
Immediately from the restart we scored again. Levi chased down a lose ball and calmly scored from close range. We took a thoroughly deserved 2 nil lead into the break.
For the opening 30 minutes of the 2nd half the game followed the pattern of the 1st. We did all the pressing with our hosts content to try and catch us on the break. Apart from us missing a number of half chances the only real thing to happen was the Molesey skipper getting sent off for picking up 2 yellow cards in 2 minutes. The second yellow was for a despairing tug on Lawrie's shirt as he raced past him.
The Board room hospitality at Molesey is particularly good and whilst I was preparing myself for the “apres footie” Ricky Farnden scored his 2nd of the night. From where I was I couldn’t see the goal but everyone there agreed that it was very nicely taken and it effectively put an end to the game.
Molesey pulled a goal back in the 84th minute thanks to an amazing cock up by Higgsy. On the edge of our box, with no one near him he some how managed to give the ball to an opponent standing 5 yards to the side of him.. Terry made a great save from the initial attempt by the Molesey attacker but the ball fell unkindly for him and Will Marlowe knocked in the rebound. 3 - 1 final whistle.
We now have a chance of rectifying that dreadful performance against Cove in the semi. Should we be successful we will play either Westfield or Bedfont Town in our 3rd consecutive Southern Combination Cup Final.
