Molesey 2-4 Folkestone Invicta - Official Match Report

Molesey and Folkestone Invicta played out a six goal FA Cup thriller for the second time in three days following Saturday's draw at the Fullicks Stadium, and it was the Kent side that made it through to the next round with Stuart King's hat-trick helping them to a 4-2 victory after extra-time.

It was heartbreaking for the Moles, who surrendered a two goal lead given to them by Matt Baxter's fourth goal of the competition and Nick White's strike midway through the second half.

However, a scrambled goal and a disputed penalty forced extra-time, before Matt Newman gave the visitors the lead early in the second period. A mistake in the Moles defence allowed King to complete his hat-trick with three minutes to go.

Molesey lined up missing Rob Sheridan and Moses Spencer meaning Ollie Robinson partnered Kristian Webb at the heart of defence. Baxter returned to lead the attack having missed Saturday's draw in Kent, whilst Dean Thomas made his first start in over six months.

The Moles started the brighter and deservedly took the lead when Saturday's two goal hero Ross Chalke made a rampaging run through the Folkestone defence and picked out Baxter on the edge of the box. Baxter advanced and coolly placed the ball beyond Roddy Hayward in the Folkestone goal.

The home side were looking to expose a blatant lack of pace in the visitor's defence and nearly doubled their lead when Craig Lewington and Dale Marvell combined to set up Chalke, but after getting to the ball before Hayward he poked his effort past the post.

Folkestone's long ball tactics were in stark contrast to the Moles' passing game, but they forced their way back into the match as the half wore on, with Liam Friend flicking a header wide from a corner and the impressive Nat Blanks stinging the palms of Wester Young from distance.

King had his first sight of goal when he got to a through ball ahead of Young, Young did well to force him wide, it was to King's credit that he stayed on his feet, and Webb did exceptionally well to clear off the line to preserve Molesey's lead.

Marvell then had a shot from distance saved by Hayward as the half drew to a close.

Luke Elliott had a great opportunity to extend Molesey's lead early in the second half but glanced a header wide when left unmarked at a set piece, although it was the visitors who had the greater share of possession, with both Roland Edge and Dane Luchford both shooting just wide from the edge of the box.

It was somewhat against the run of play that Molesey doubled their advantage, and there was an element of fortune as Baxter and substitute Chan Quan forced Friend into giving the ball away cheaply, Tom Windsor attempted to play in White and the ball took a very kind deflection that played into White's path, who dinked the ball over Hayward and trickled into the net.

The Moles had one foot in the First Qualifying Round and a clash with Eastbourne United, but within two minutes of going two up Folkestone hit back when a corner wasn't properly cleared and was headed back across goal by Friend. King was on hand to nod in from close range to give his side a lifeline.

Baxter created a chance out of nothing shortly afterwards when he out-muscled Chris Elliott, who was hoping in vain that the ball was rolling harmlessly out for a goal kick, took the ball past Friend and with the angle against him shot straight at Hayward when a pass to the onrushing White might have been a better option.

Just seven minutes were left on the clock when King's fiercely struck shot from the angle of the box hit Tim Pitt standing just two yards away on the arm. The ref, who otherwise had a fine game, surprised most in the ground by pointing to the spot, and King made no mistake to draw his side level.

With the momentum now with the visitors they threw themselves at the Moles in the remaining minutes in an attempt to avoid extra-time, with Chris Elliott's torpedo like throws into the box causing several anxious moments, although it was the home side that nearly won it at the death when Luke Elliott's header from a Lewington corner just cleared the bar.

Having spent a large portion of the second half without the ball the Molesey players ran out of steam during extra-time, with Folkestone the dominant side.

Substitute Josh Burchell missed an absolute sitter when Blanks' cross from the right found him unmarked six yards from goal, but when it looked easier to score he dinked his shot over the bar. King was then denied by a terrific last ditch tackle by the excellent Tim Pitt as the Moles clung on to half-time.

There was a huge element of fortune in Folkestone taking the lead, as a corner fell favourably for Blanks to strike at goal from the edge of the box. His hopelessly sliced effort didn't pose a threat to Young's goal, but it did find its way back to the corner taker, who flung in another cross that was headed home by Newman.

Molesey threw Webb up front in an attempt to force penalties, but Folkestone spent most of the remainder of the game camped by the Molesey corner flag, and Hayward remained untroubled.

A mistake in the Moles defence when trying to clear a corner saw Robinson dispossessed, allowing King a clear run at goal to complete his hat-trick with a clever dink over Young to round off the scoring.

Despite the disappointment the Moles can take great credit from the tie, which was a credit to both sides. The cup fixtures continue with a trip to Pagham in the FA Vase on Saturday.
