Dorking Wanderers 6-0 Molesey

Report by Andrew Finch

Molesey suffered a fourth defeat in a row with a 6-0 hammering at Dorking Wanderers.

It was a performance and result to send alarm bells ringing, as after a fairly even opening twenty minutes the Moles capitulated upon conceding the opening goal, and could have ended up on the wrong end of an even bigger hiding.

Nathan Mottley and Joe Nwoko both had half chances in the opening stages, and Wanderers had barely threatened when right winger Matt Briggs shook off Marlon Rodney and Dre Grobler too easily and rifled past Liam Allen.

Moments later it was almost two, with Kev Terry getting in behind the Moles defence but shooting harmlessly wide.

Two goals in a minute on the stroke of half-time killed the game as a contest, with the Moles failing to clear their lines following a corner resulting in Dean Gunner's heavily deflected effort wrong footing Allen and nestling into the corner.

The Moles' frustration was evident, with skipper Craig Lewington's optimistic shot straight from kick off only providing the opportunity for Slav Huk to launch yet another raid down Molesey's left, and Briggs once again provided the finishing touch.

There was no let up in the second half, with Ben Dyatt hitting the inside of the post and Terry missing an absolute sitter, shortly before getting on the end of a fine team move to make it four.

The moment all Moles fans feared occurred on the hour mark, when club legend James McShane nodded in from close range following more good work from Briggs. To his credit he did not celebrate, but the game had turned into a bit of a procession by that point.

Mainly due to the absence of McShane the Moles have now ditched the diamond formation that had served them so well over the past two years. Understandably given the high turnover of players manager Pete Lelliott is still experimenting with formations, but the 4-3-3 deployed had little impact, with wide players Mottley and Ashby Charles too isolated and well-marshalled to provide much of an attacking threat, and too far advanced to help out defensively.

Allen did his best to keep the score respectable, denying McShane a second and also keeping out Jake Beecroft's strike, but Briggs capped an impressive display with his hat-trick in the closing stages.

The Moles now have a week off to either welcome back missing players or bring in reinforcements before travelling to newly promoted Horsham next
