Molesey and Godalming played out an entertaining and often feisty 2-2 draw at Walton Road.
It was the visitors who would have been happier with the point as they extended their mini revival to one defeat in five games, whilst it consigned the Moles to a winless October.
It had started so well for the home side. Charlie Samuels created himself half a yard of space on the edge of the box in the seventh minute and smashed an effort into the bottom corner to give the Moles the lead.
They had chances to extend that lead, with both Samuels and Jake Ross firing dangerously across goal.
It was against the run of play that Godalming equalised, as Joshua Andrews capitalised on a misplaced pass from Ryan David to break clear and cross for Jack Mazzone to score from close range, and chances were few and far between the remainder of the half.
The Moles had three penalty appeals of varying legitimacy throughout the 90 minutes. The ref chose to ignore a fairly blatant trip on James Rogers-Oben, although to be fair this appeared to take place just outside the box.
Next up Graeme Purdy slid to cut out a cross in the box and in doing so the ball struck his arm, although given the level of intent a spot kick might have been harsh.
However, quite how both ref and linesman missed ex Mole Chris Wales bundle Dre Grobler over in the box in the second half is anyone’s guess.
By this time the Moles were 2-1 down and becoming increasingly desperate, with Mazzone turning provider this time for Darren Wheeler to bundle in from close range shortly after the hour mark.
Samuels was denied by a terrific block from Purdy after the ball broke loose at a corner, but the Moles got themselves back on level terms when Grobler prodded home at the near post after good work from Sam Charles down the right.
The ref had to sort out a number of incidents of handbags between players from both sides, which didn’t help the flow of the game, and it was the Moles who looked the more likely to snatch the three points, with Samuels’ deflected strike drifting agonisingly the wrong side of the far post the closest either side came.
Grobler struck an effort wide, whilst substitute Saheed Sankoh was crowded out before getting a shot away.
With virtually the action of the game Liam Allen prevented Mazzone winning it for the Gs.
Winter is coming. It’s likely to be a long and challenging one for the Moles and this result leaves them just hovering above the bottom 6. However, they certainly showed enough today to suggest they can keep their heads above water and not become ensconced in a relegation dogfight.
