Molesey put the disappointment of Saturday’s defeat at Sittingbourne behind them to win at bottom of the table Godalming Town.
To dust off that tired and over-used cliché it was very much a game of two halves, with Godalming good value for their half-time lead, but two quickfire Dre Grobler goals at the start of the second half turned the game on its head.
Molesey welcomed Ryan David and Antonio Simeone back to the defence, and a re-shuffle resulted in Ashby Charles filling in at left back, Grobler moving up front and Josh Andrews into midfield against his former club.
Godalming lined up with former Mole Chris Wales at the heart of their defence.
Graeme Purdy hit a speculative effort from distance wide in the early stages, and Grobler saw a spectacular volley just clear the post.
It was a must-win game for the hosts in the increasingly unlikely event they will beat the drop, and this was evident during a first half where they were swifter to the ball and sharper to use it.
Matt Bunyan put a close range header wide, before they opened the scoring when Craig Lewington could only help Piers Oldland’s goalbound effort into the net. It wasn’t quite Daren Bent style, and was somewhat harshly awarded as an own goal rather than credited to Oldland.
Darren Wheeler’s well struck volley brought a good save from Allen after good work down the right by William Efambe, although the Gs were dealt a blow when top scorer Graeme Purdy limped off midway through the half.
There were too many hopeful long balls from the Moles, although they came within a whisker of equalising when David’s header from Lewington’s corner was blocked by a combination of keeper and defender, with Lewington launching into his now weekly appeal to the linesman that the ball had crossed the line.
The second half was only moments old when Ashley Lodge thumped a volley against the underside of the bar with the Moles once again appealing the ball had crossed the line.
In the scramble that ensued Charles got a kick in the face on the six yard line but the ref somewhat surprisingly decided to give a drop ball on the edge of the box rather than a penalty.
The woodwork came to Godalming’s rescue again shortly afterwards in keeping out Andrews’ shot, but their reprieve lasted just moments, with the alert Grobler turning in the rebound.
Within three minutes the Moles had the lead. Grobler grabbed his third goal in three games by sending a looping header in off the post from Lewington’s corner.
The Moles were now calling the shots. Lewington and Andrews failed to trouble Oneal Garnes with free kicks in promising positions, whilst Charles and Andrews shot wide wastefully with team-mates better placed.
Tom Windsor produced his usual all action display and was key to providing a midfield screen along with Lewington and Lodge in the closing stages, and James King, who can surely already claim the title of most improved player this season, was solid alongside Simeone at centre half.
As would be expected Godalming threw men forward trying to rescue something from the game, and Allen did well to hang on to Bunyan’s fierce strike and turn away Carl Garstang’s bending free kick as the Moles held out for just their third away win of the season.
