SAME OLD, SAME OLD... MOLES RUE MISSED CHANCES

As miscarriages of justice go it’s not quite on the scale of the Birmingham 6, but how Molesey left Sittingbourne empty handed after completely dominating the opening 70 minutes seemed incredibly unjust.

However, two soft goals in the final twenty minutes saw them fall to their 14th defeat in 17 away games.

This seemed the perfect opportunity to improve that sorry statistic. Sittingbourne are firmly ensconced in mid table with no prospect of promotion or relegation. They had won just once in their previous 12 league games and were without a clean sheet in 15.

And in truth it showed. Their only noteworthy chance during those first 70 minutes occurred before 60 seconds were on the clock, as Liam Allen was slightly lackadaisical dealing with a backpass and eventually smashed his clearance against David Abe, but the ball ricocheted a couple of feet over the bar.

The Moles were soon calling the shots, with Tom Windsor drawing a fairly routine save from Simon Overland, and the season’s latest debutant, Adrian Spence heading wastefully wide.

Grobler’s bullet header from Craig Lewington’s corner deserved better than to end up down the throat of Overland.

Ashley Lodge bossed the first half, and he had a golden opportunity to open the scoring on the stroke of half-time but was denied by Overland after bursting clear of the Sittingbourne defence.

The second half was much of the same. Grobler had another free header from a Lewington corner scrambled off the line with the Moles and Lewington in particular strongly appealing that the ball had crossed.

There was a lack of cutting edge up front. This was evident when Josh Andrews fired a ball into the channel between defence and goalkeeper that should have resulted in a tap in for either Spence, Ashby Charles or Joe Nwoko, but they all remained static and the chance was gone.

Sam Charles just edged out Andrews for man of the match, and his terrific first time ball released Nwoko, who was denied by a last-ditch challenge by Gil Carvalho.

And so we entered those fateful final twenty minutes. Sam Charles blocked Josh Wilson’s goalbound effort in what was assumed to be an isolated venture into Molesey territory, but just seconds later the Brickies were in the lead.

It was against the run of play. But the Moles can only have themselves to blame for allowing the 23 feet frame of Jono Richardson to have the freedom of the six yard box from a set piece. He didn’t need a second invitation and headed firmly beyond Allen.

The Moles looked shell-shocked and a little bit sorry for themselves. They committed men forward, and that was to be their undoing five minutes later.

A Molesey corner was cleared and all of a sudden the Brickies were breaking three on two. With 7 or 8 players gently trotting back and Sam Charles somewhat unwisely opting to play offside the ball fell kindly for Abe to smash beyond Allen.

From that point on it was obvious the Moles would be going home empty handed. In fact it nearly got even worse when Conrad Lee danced through the visiting defence but was denied by Allen.

Substitute David Adeoye was played in by Lodge but snatched at the chance and was easily thwarted by Overland.

Results for the four teams below Molesey continue to be kind, and they remain eight points clear of the bottom three despite picking up just four points from the previous nine games.

They’ll need to be considerably more ruthless on Tuesday night against Godalming, who are scrapping for their lives and showing belated green shoots of recovery despite remaining adrift at the bottom of the league.
