Lewes 3-0 Molesey

Lewes 3-0 Molesey

Mark Billett23 Oct 2017 - 10:56

Molesey fell to a convincing defeat against high-flying Lewes.

It was a scoreline that reflected the hosts dominance, however it took two ridiculously soft penalty decisions and a howler from the otherwise excellent Liam Allen to separate the sides.

There was no lack of effort from the Moles, but they ended up well beaten and offered little attacking threat throughout.

The Moles back four was made up entirely of centre backs, whilst the movement of the Lewes front players meant they regularly found pockets of space amongst the Moles five-man midfield.

Ross Chalke and Ashley Lodge tried manfully to support lone frontman Olu Akinsanya, but he was too often left isolated.

It was only the brilliance of Allen that kept the game goalless for forty minutes.

He made an outstanding point blank save from Frankie Chappell in the opening stages, and five minutes were not yet on the clock when Ronnie Conlon fired wastefully over from the edge of the box.

Jamie Brotherton’s shot from the edge of the box was clawed away by Allen, who then saved bravely at the feet of Gus Sow.

Billy Medlock was then frustrated when played in one on one, before the hosts were given a helping hand.

Rhys Paul appeared to win the ball when challenging Brotherton. He also appeared to win it outside the box, but the ref controversially pointed to the spot.

Brotherton smashed home the resulting penalty.

There were very few attacks to speak of from a Molesey point of view, let alone an effort at goal.

It took until the opening moments of the second half for that moment to come, when Akinsanya hit the side netting from a tight angle.

Allen continued to deny the Rooks, saving bravely at the feet of Bouwe Bosma.

He had a rare moment to forget though when failing to deal with Antonio Simeone’s backpass. The loose ball broke for Medlock to bundle home from close range.

It was three soon after. There was no argument that Josh Andrew Bundled over Steve Brinkhurst, but again the offence appeared to take place outside the box.

Indeed the referee’s assistant seemed to think so, and despite being better placed made no attempt to try and change the ref’s mind, who pointed to the spot. Medlock converted.

Allen did not let his earlier mistake affect him, denying Medlock a hat-trick, and keeping out Harry Reed’s effort at the death.

Molesey did have chances of their own in the closing stages. Chalke fired just wide after exchanging passes with Lodge, and the same player headed a corner just over.

The ref’s poor afternoon was summed up when he failed to penalise Rhys Paul’s trip on Medlock inside the box that was much more a penalty than the two he gave.

The win moves Lewes top of the table, whilst the Moles have a more winnable looking game on Tuesday when they host East Grinstead Town.
