Molesey 1-1 Ramsgate

Mark Billett26 Nov 2017 - 18:13

Molesey remain in the bottom three following a disappointing draw with fellow strugglers Ramsgate.

It felt very much like two points dropped for the Moles, but in truth neither side can claim to deserve the three points in what was a desperately poor game.

Taylor Roles and Dre Grobler came into the side in place of Ryan David and Ross Chalke, and it started off well enough for the home team, with full-backs Ashby Charles and Ato Okai causing problems down both flanks.

Okai drew a foul by the corner flag from one of his rampaging runs, and from Craig Lewington’s free kick Ronny Sobowale stabbed home the loose ball after the Rams defence had failed to clear.

Instead of galvanising the Moles the goal seemed to have the opposite effect, and the Rams grew into the match as a result.

However, their only sights of goal were not so much created but rather handed to them on a plate by Molesey errors.

Liam Allen’s poor kick found its way to Rory Smith, and with the Moles keeper stranded, Smith could only lob the ball harmlessly wide.

Next up Lewington’s poor backpass was cut out by Smith, but in trying to round Allen he managed to run the ball out of play.

The second half brought about an increase in goalscoring opportunities, if not an increase in quality.

Josh Andrew was twice denied by fine saves from Luke Watkins, whilst at the other end Allen did well to turn Alfie Paxman’s drive round the post.

Watkins remained motionless as Charles’s effort from the edge of the box crept inches past the far post.

Molesey had a golden chance to seal the win with around fifteen minutes remaining.

Olu Akinsanya got clear down the Molesey right and put the ball on a plate for an unmarked Sobowale ten yards from goal.

However Watkins pulled off a quite brilliant save and was able to smother the loose ball.

It proved crucial, as within sixty seconds Allen and Okai seemed to get in each other’s way dealing with Paxman’s cross, and Smith bundled home the loose ball.

The draw extends Molesey’s poor run to one win in nine games, and although still a long way off the one relegation spot they’ll go to bottom side Shoreham next week with the clear intention of putting more daylight between the sides.

Before then they welcome Thamesmead to Walton Road on Tuesday evening.
