Croydon 3-3 Molesey

Mark Billett27 Mar 2013 - 20:13

9 MEN JUST FAIL TO HOLD OUT !

Molesey make the envious task of getting through the traffic to get to their game at Croydon last night, and all seemed to be a worthwhile journey until a crazy 2 minutes in injury time.

The Moles started well, but after going 1 down from a corner, the Moles immediately responded with a fine strike from Joe Grant from the edge of the box. Our goal seemed to rejuvenate The Trams as they started to get the lions share of possession, impressing with their counter attack prowese causing the Moles some defensive issues but were vulnerable to the counter attack themselves as the first half came to a close with the score 1 a-piece.

The second half Molesey looked more organised and started to impose themselves on the game, then Ross Chalke took centre stage with his mesmeric goal. Running into the Croydons box, he was surrounded with defenders, but with guile, balance and trickery he beat 5 defenders en-route before calmly slotting the ball home from close range, a real worthy goal of the season it has to be said.

At 2-1 the Moles looked comfortable, but credit to Croydon who were dangerous all night with their attacking flair and movement but rarely troubled the Molesey 'keeper with their end product. With 10 minutes to go and the game coming to a close, an interception by Pete Song sent him clear and with the keeper to beat he slid to ball to Manny Quarshie who was having a good evening, slotted the ball home albeit strenuous appeals for offside by the Croydon defenders. 3-1

Whilst Quarshie was slotting the ball home for his goal, a challenge from the Croydon defender forced him to leave the pitch, and as all the Molesey substitutes were made, this left the Moles to see the game out with 10 men. As time went on it looked clear that Molesey would be leaving with 3 points however, the final 5 minutes the game took another massive blow for the Moles when Kristian Webb had to leave the pitch with a gashed ankle, so now the Moles were down to 9 men.

Croydon were throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Molesey as injury time approached. The injuries to Quarshie and Webb seem to bite Molesey on the backside as there was 6 minutes of injusy time to play. Finally pressure told with 2 goals in 2 minutes from the busy Karl Douglin in injury time the 94th and 96th minute saw Croydon came away with a 3-3 draw.

An exciting game for the neutral but not for the faint heated if your clubs involved...... we look back and wonder if Webb and Quarshie didn't get injured ?

We now try to erase the disappointment by going onto Saturday where we entertain Chessington & Hook at Walton Road - kick off 3pm weather permitting of course.
