Alton Town 1-2 Molesey - Official Match Report

Mark Billett14 Aug 2013 - 15:34

Tom Windsor-inspired Molesey overcame league newcomers Alton Town in a strange encounter in Hampshire.

By Andrew Finch

In a first half completed dominated by the visitors Windsor's strike was the only difference between the sides at the break, and the Moles' profligacy in front of goal and casualness in defence looked to have cost them when a completely unmarked Ashley Peck drew the visitors level ten minutes into the second half.

Chances continued to be spurned, and when it begun to look increasingly likely that the Moles would drop two valuable points Windsor's cross was turned into his own net by home skipper Rikki Long, before Jamie Brown was sent off for a daft lunge on the Moles' debutant keeper Liam Allen.

Despite the obvious need for shooting practise, there were still plenty of positives for the Moles management, and after two early season defeats the three points was the most important objective of the evening.

Luke Elliott smashed a cross into the outside of Cathel McLean's near post in the opening minutes as the Moles started brightly, and the home side were all at sea defensively as both Elliott, and then Rob Sheridan had free headers they were unable to direct on target.

Matt Baxter steamrolled his way into the box and picked out the onrushing Ross Chalke, whose scuffed effort should have been turned in by Windsor from three yards out but he missed the ball completely and the ball trickled past the post.

Chan Quan and Hanif Boyle both had efforts that hit the netting behind the goal rather than trouble McLean, before the Moles finally got the goal their efforts deserved, when Tim Pitt and Quan combined cleverly down the right, and Quan's cross was played into Windsor's path by Boyle, who rifled the ball past McLean for his first goal of the season.

Baxter was the apex of the attack, and despite his link up play and work-rate being excellent, his finishing was woeful, which was emphasized when Sheridan's burst into the box picked him out all alone at the far post, but just when it looked easier to score he scuffed his effort into the turf and it bounced up and landed on the top of the stanchion.

The only effort at goal for the home side during the opening 45 minutes was a shot from Peck that rolled harmlessly closer to the corner flag than the goal.

Baxter had two decent efforts off target at the start of the second half, and just when it looked like the second half would follow the same pattern as the first, the hosts drew level.

The Moles were guilty of being slightly casual for the early stages of the half, and there seemed little danger when the otherwise immaculate Sheridan was in possession by the Moles corner flag, but his attempted clearance up the line was intercepted by Jamie Philips, who cut inside and picked out Peck at the far post, who shot first time past Allen.

The goal visibly lifted the home side, and despite the Moles still carrying the greater attacking threat, the second half was much more even as a contest, and Peck might have given Alton the lead when Philips once again got clear on the right, and with Allen in no man's land his cross bounced awkwardly and Peck couldn't quite grow enough to direct his header on goal.

Sheridan almost made up for his earlier error when he found himself in the box on the end of Chang's cut back, but took too many touches and saw his eventual shot blocked by Long.

Baxter had another couple of efforts off target, Chalke headed a corner over, and several bursts down the right by Chan and dangerous cut backs just failed to pick out a blue shirt.

Molesey threw on forwards Dale Marvell and Manny Quarshie, both of whom tested McLean shortly after coming on, but it was another burst from Windsor that finally gave the Moles the three points, as he latched onto one of Craig Lewington's countless clever passes, and his cross was turned into his own goal by Long.

Having been booked two minutes previously for bringing down Elliott, Brown was given his marching orders for needlessly sliding in on Allen after the Moles keeper had gathered the ball, and despite some misplaced passes leading them into trouble, the Moles held out in relative comfort.
