Molesey 5-0 Alton Town - Official Match Report

Mark Billett21 Oct 2013 - 15:25

Molesey hit five goals for the second successive home game as they eased past bottom of the table Alton Town 5-0.

Matt Baxter and James McShane kept up their impressive scoring records, hitting goals either side of Ross Chalke’s hat-trick as the Moles moved up to a season’s best sixth place in the Combined Counties Premier Division.

The early stages gave little indication of the drubbing that was to follow as the two teams traded blows quite evenly.

The Moles forced a number of early corners without seriously troubling Cathel McLean in the Alton goal, whilst for the visitors an over-hit cross from Jamie Phillips nearly flew into the top corner of Wester Young’s goal.

A simple ball over the top presented Josh Daniels with an opportunity, but his first time volley didn’t trouble Young.

Two goals in two minutes midway through the half knocked the stuffing out of the visitors, and from then on there only ever looked like being one winner.

Both Chalke and then Craig Lewington won possession inside the Alton half, and after the latter’s intervention the ball fell invitingly for Baxter to rifle a volley past McLean from the edge of the box.

Dale Marvell was instrumental in Molesey’s second, as his vicious swerving shot from 25 yards was too hot for McLean to handle and Chalke was on hand to volley home from close range.

Kristian Webb smacked a header against the underside of the bar as the Moles begun to dominate, although they were frustrated by a deserved booking for Marvell and a harsh looking one for Baxter by a ref who otherwise had a fine game.

Alton would have been disappointed by the manner in which the Moles scored the killer third goal early in the second half, as Chalke was left unmarked from Joe Pratley-Jones’ deep free kick to sweep a first time half-volley into the corner of McLean’s goal.

When the sides met back in August Baxter was having a luckless time in front of goal, as he failed to find the net for the fourth successive game. However, he has gone on to score 14 goals in 12 games since then, and this time around it was Tom Windor’s turn to wear the toblerone shaped boots.

Nick White made a lively substitute appearance for the last half hour and he twice got to the byline and set up opportunities for Windsor, only for him to clear the bar on both occasions, whilst another near post opportunity for Windor also went high and wide.

Chalke completed his hat-trick when McLean failed to hold another effort from distance, whilst McShane made it four in four since his return to the club last month by firing a volley past substitute keeper Luke Theakston having been set free by White.

Webb missed a couple of headers from corners as the Moles continued to press, and at the other end Callum Burch missed a couple of opportunities to grab a consolation for the visitors.

The Moles will now look to put their inconsistency behind them and record a third league win on the bounce at Raynes Park Vale next Saturday; a feat they have only managed once since the opening fortnight of last season.
